What is seed/seedling treatment?

Seeds sold in markets are close to a chemical product. They need to be treated so they can recover their natural power. To treat your seeds first place them in warm water to remove the chemicals. Then proceed with the treatment.

It is said that “when the twig is bent so grows the tree”. In a similar vein seed quality is imperative to the success of farming.  Therefore let us look at how Korean Natural Farming techniques maximizes seed vitality. Seeds bursting with vitality will be healthy and productive throughout their life cycle.

We can compare seeds to humans. It is often the case that children from poor households have a good appetite, both eating and digesting well.  In contrast, children from a rich household can often be picky, complaining about the food. Such children are more prone to illness.

Seeds are similar. Compared to overprotected seeds, seeds grown under harsh conditions have superior adaptability and digestive power. They possess strong vitality, a vitality they inherited from their parents. Nowadays seeds are bred in artificial conditions and soaked in chemicals. Their nutritional composition is unbalanced and their vitality is poor. Such seeds are unable to grow well without human protection, and are unable to attain their full potential regardless of the scientific treatment they have been given.

In Natural Farming, seeds are collected from crops in the poor, harsh parts of the field. These seeds might not have such a high yield, but whatever they lose in this regard they more than make up for by being very strong and tough.

Natural Farming thinking holds that the conventional practice of soaking seeds for long periods before broadcast leads to seed nutrient loss. Therefore, Natural Farming seed treatment is quick and timely. Seeds, seedlings and saplings are treated with a seed treatment solution (SES) to boost their vigor. This solution is exremely powerful. The difference in seed shape as well as root development, leaf thickness is visible to the naked eye.

Making SES is very simple. The materials for making SES are easily obtainable by farmers at home, in the fields and from local nature.

How to make SES

Seed/seedling treatment is made by mixing the following inputs  at the following dilution ratios.

Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ)  (500)

Brown Rice Vinegar (BRV) (500)

Oriental Herb Nutrient (OHN) (1000)

Natural Mineral A (NMA) (1000)

You can add:

Fish Amino Acid (FAA)  (1000) if seedlings are small and weak.

Water Soluble Calcium (WCA) (1000) if seedlings are overgrown and soft.

Seeds which germinate quickly (turnip, chinese cabbage, bean) should be soaked for two hours; seeds which germinate more slowly (cucumber, melon, squash, lotus) should be soaked for four hours. Seeds which germinate very slowly (rice, barley, tomato) should be soaked for 7 hours. A half to one hour is sufficient for potatoes, ginger, taro and garlic. When you transplant rice seedlings you should soak or spray SES on them the day before transplanting. Apply SES after transplanting also.
